Henry Schoolcraft

[C F G C ]

[C] Henry he [F] arrived one day to [Am] make his name a [G] known one
[C] Henry he was [F] never shy to [Am] let you know his [G] mind[C]
Henry he was []F always in the [Am] thick of any [G] action
and [C] then he wrote down [F] everything, [G] one word at a [C] time

Born in [C] Guilderland - in 1793
Became a [Am] schoolman - at the university
then a [F] glassman - the trade of his family
then he moved [C] on- he had something [G] else to be
He was a [C] worker - a man of industry
full of [Am] wonder - and curiosity
full of [F] hunger - ambition and energy
and never [C] wrong - he had such [G] certainty

In [F] 1820 Henry joined the [C] governor
to [F] claim Sault Ste. Marie for [C] America [G]

Then he was [C] hired - as the Indian Agent there
Never [Am] tired - always looking for the new and rare
Sometimes [F] inspired - with poems that he liked to share
and often [C] gone - travelling [G] everywhere[C]

Henry he [F] preserved what could have [Am] disappeared [G] forever[C]
Henry didn’t [F] say who had filled [Am] up his pen with [G] words[C]
Henry he knew [F] best, at least he [Am] certainly knew [G] better
just [C] how things should be [F] done and how to [G] choose who should be [C] heard

He made a [C] magazine - the first one in Michigan
Wrote the Indian [Am] stories - Longfellow was inspired by them
Fought for [F] treaties - and Sugar Island for his children
Found the [C] Mississippi’s source - with the help of the [G] Indians
He lost his [C] first son - he wept and mourned and then
He got [Am] religion - became a Presbyterian
He lost his [F] job - when the government changed again
Could things get [C] worse? His wife died near [G] Hamilton

It’s [Am] hard to hate a [Dm] man
who did so [G] much to save a [C] past
It’s [Am] hard to love a [Dm] man
who loved to [G] glorify [C] himself
Each [Am] time you reach to [Dm] pull down
all the [G] words that he [C] created
it’s [Am] hard to love and [Dm] not to hate
to [G] take him off the [C] shelf[C]

Henry he [F] arrived one day to [Am] make his name a [G] known one[C]
Henry he was [F] never shy to [Am] let you know his [G] mind[C]
Henry he was [F] always in the [Am] thick of any [G] action
