Stay Until Morning Comes

Look up into that night sky. There’s a darkness that’s come over us all. There’s a darkness over that little cabin down by the lake. There’s a darkness over that city on the horizon. A darkness over Joe and a darkness over Sue-Marie. But this hard blackness is broken by a few lights. The light from the coals of this fire, telling us that our story is almost done. From the city that lone, proud Coke Oven flame burning like a candlelight vigil held in the hope that Sue-Marie will survive. And then the light of Sue-Marie’s headlights returning to the camp. Joe and Sue-Marie meet at the threshold like new lovers, full of love, forgiveness and desire. And they agree that though they both feel very alone in this darkness they must stay together as they wait for morning to come.

The night has come now

I am alone. Oh moon above me

Stay until morning comes

I won’t breathe a word to anyone

Show me how I might hold on

Stay until morning comes

Breath of my breath

Soul of my soul come to me

Breathe right through me.

Stay until morning comes

I won’t breathe a word to anyone

Show me how I might hold on

Stay until morning comes

Bridge

Stay with me, I am empty,

I am cold, I am hungry,

I am tired and I can’t sleep.

Believe me, are you listening?

Like a child I am helpless

and I’m crying, asking . . .

And I have come here

My mouth is dry, my tongue is tied

Oh God surround me.

Stay until morning comes

I won’t breathe a word to anyone

Show me how I might hold on

Stay until morning comes

Stay until morning comes

Stay until morning comes

I am a young Canadian boy, I am a Canadian man

I’m running with the life of my father’s father’s blood

pounding in the veins of my hands - - it’s in my hands.
